About Us
At Cape Sable Cottages we want to make you feel at home...or even better, to feel like our special guest!
Please, let us take a moment or two to introduce ourselves to you.
We are PJ & Nancy Jones and we are the owners and operators of Cape Sable Cottages.
We have tried to take all your needs and comforts into consideration as we built and designed these seaside cottage homes- hopefully you'll find that we were successful in that aspect.
Before the actual building began, we were in the planning and praying stages for about 3 years... its a long story, but we'd be happy to share it with you over a coffee on the deck :o)
PJ and I have always been "people people" and its proven to be a requirement for this business... there has to be some reward and so far we have found that the ultimate reward is meeting you... the people we get to meet are just amazing...and we eagerly anticipate each and every arrival... as PJ often says "I wonder who we'll meet today!"... hopefully it will be you.
Before I get lost in my thoughts, I should also tell you that we are the proud parents of Laura (22), Melissa (21) and Thane (19) as well as pseudo parents to Ginger- our overly spoiled mixed breed canine (who would be down right INSULTED if she thought she was a dog!), our two sheep- Millie and Mollie and the newest additions, our two goats - Billy (of course) and Peanut.
We have lived here on Long Point for 20+ years, this being where we built when we were first married. The land has 'always' been in PJ's family- being settled by the Island's first permanent settlers when Archelaus Smith's son James built here in the 1700's.
Up until 100 years ago there were several homes and barns on 'the Point'... these have all been reclaimed by the ravages of time and now its just the cottages and us- although the cottages are on their own private acreage.
PJ & I are also history buffs, and if you have relatives from Cape Island, you're probably related to either PJ or myself (and maybe both of us- as we are both 7th generation descendants from Archelaus Smith). Family research and genealogy are an ever growing interest, bringing many of you to the area... Mention to us who you're related to, we just might be able to help fill in some branches of your family tree.
Another of PJ's projects has been restoring and creating rock walls. In order to graze the cattle and sheep that every household had, one had to erect rock walls to prevent them from roaming where they shouldn't go. All over Long Point there are remenants of these old walls, some sunken into the ground as plants, trees and bushes grew over them for decades on end. Some walls were broken to allow passage through them with carts and wagons and later vehicles. Seeing as there is NO shortage of rocks here on the Island (the local joke is that this is where Noah dumped his ballast rock from the Ark...) PJ has found an ample supply from which to refurbish the old walls as well as build many new ones. He has completed the rock walls for cottages #3 (The Garden Cottage) and #5 (Sable Bay) and #1 (Schooner Lodge's)... needless to say its hard and time consuming work...but he loves it.
While PJ is doing all the heavy, hard manual 'hands on' labour... I'm probably in the office doing the necessary paper work and bookkeeping or making wedding or birthday cakes. Together we make a great team...and this is definitely a team game.
Sorry to ramble...I'll end the introduction here... but if you still want to know more about what makes us 'tick' just ask when you come- we both like to talk (in case you didn't pick up on that in my ramblings :o)
We look forward to meeting each and everyone one of you!
